Comparatives and Superlatives

👉Comparatives and superlatives are used to show differences between two or more thingsComparative adjectives compare two things, while superlative adjectives compare one thing to all others in a group ✅

Comparatives: Comparing Two Things! ✌️

We use comparatives when we're talking about two things and want to show which one has more of a certain quality.

How they work: Usually, we add "-er" to the end of a short word, or use "more" before a longer word.

Examples:

  • Short word: My dog is faster 🐶 than your cat! 🐱 (The dog has more speed!)

  • Long word: This book is more interesting 📖 than that movie. 🎬 (The book has more interesting-ness!)

  • Irregular! Some words are tricky! My pizza was better 🍕 than your salad. 🥗 (Not "gooder"!)

  • Another irregular: This small car is less expensive 💸 than that huge truck. 🚚 (Using "less" for the opposite!)

Superlatives: The BEST (or WORST) of the Group! 👑

Superlatives come in when you're comparing three or more things and want to say which one is the absolute top (or bottom!) of the pile.

How they work: We usually add "-est" to the end of a short word, or use "most" before a longer word. Don't forget "the" before the superlative!

Examples:

  • Short word: Mount Everest is the highest 🏔️ mountain in the world! 🌍 (It's at the very top!)

  • Long word: That's the most beautiful 🦋 butterfly I've ever seen! 😍 (No other butterfly is more beautiful!)

  • Irregular! He's the best dancer 🕺 in the whole competition! 🏆 (No one dances better!)

  • Another irregular: This was the worst traffic 🚦 I've ever been in. 😫 (It was the absolute lowest quality of traffic!).

Remember
  • Comparatives: Comparing two things (e.g., taller, more difficult)
  • Superlatives: Comparing three or more things (e.g., the tallest, the most difficult).
